Facebook; so much so that the first thing we do on the web, before we even check our emails, is log on to Facebook.
No wonder Facebook is the
most visited website in Nepal, getting more hits than even Google. With countless hours wasted online, people have started to develop a love-hate relationship with Facebook. We've even heard a people advising on leaving Facebook for good. While
deleting Facebook account may not be entirely necessary, we do have some tips to save time and stay safe throughout your Facebook experience.
Use Third Party IMs
Facebook Chat is perhaps
the single most annoying thing there is on Facebook— you surely would expect Facebook to do better. While they’re at it, we
on the other hand will have to look for
alternatives and believe me there are many. But our pick: Pidgin, because of its simplicity, its wide range of support and its great interface. To use Facebook chat in Pidgin, simply download the
latest version of Pidgin from
http://www.pidgin.im/. Once you open the program, go to accounts, and select “
Manage Accounts”. In the dialog box, set the protocol to XMPP, enter your Facebook username (not your email-ID), set domain to chat.facebook.com, enter your password, and write any screen name as your alias. Then click on the
Advanced tab, and set the connect port to 5222, connect server to chat.facebook.com and untick the box labeled “Require SSL/TLS”. And you’re done!
Get Rid Of The Clutter
If you’re anything like the one of us, you probably can’t stand the endless stream of “so-and-so took this quiz” notifications that clutters your newsfeed. And with hundreds of games, it’s just not feasible for you to block such notifications one by one. Enter Facebook Purity, a browser add-on that gets rid of all these impurities, if you will, so that you have a clean and relevant newsfeed. Another great thing about this add-on is that you will notice a bar on top that states the number of hidden notifications, if you want you can even take a look and see if something important is hidden up.

Download The Photos At One Go
Your cousins uploaded the 50 odd photos from your weekend trip online. You want a copy of those photos but Facebook just won’t let you download them all—you’re stuck with saving the images one by one. What a bummer! Thankfully, third party apps and websites allow you to download entire albums as well as all your tagged photos automatically.
Picknzip is such a tool which allows you to download entire albums or any group of randomly selected photos as a
zip file (compressed folder) or a PDF (the former would without doubt be better). Facebook, meanwhile, is intent on blocking such services, as was the fate of browser add-ons with similar functions. Let’s just hope that Picknzip stays up and running for some more time.

No, Facebook has not released the dislike button and no, you will never know who visited your profile. Use your common sense, Facebook will never allow these (at least the latter). So the next time you open apps in Facebook that exploits your curiosity to
extract personal information out of you, think again. Edit your privacy settings; share only relevant information: at the very least, don’t let anyone other than your friends to be able to view your profile (Accounts>Privacy Settings>Friends Only>Apply these Settings). Know your rights, and stay safe!
