Apple gains ground against competition in U.S. PC market share

Apple CEO Tim Cook looks at a new IMac after presentation at Apple headquarters in Cupertino

While the iPhone and iPad have managed to grab the lion’s share of attention when it comes to Apple and technology, one of the company’s growing segments is the Mac, and the third quarter 2014 proved quite fruitful.

According to the IDC’s quarterly PC tracker, which was originally reported by Re/code, Apple managed to reach the highest PC market share ever reported within the third quarter of 2014. This accounts for only Macs, and does not have any correlation to the iPad lineup, which makes it even more noteworthy for the Cupertino-based company.

The results of the tracker show that not only has Apple edged out Lenovo with 13.4% of the U.S. PC market share, but that shipments climbed to 2.26 million within the quarter for Apple. Still ahead of Apple is Dell with 24 percent of the market share, and HP with a noteworthy 27.7 percent.

The tracker also includes global numbers, and marks Apple with a 5.7 percent increase year-over-year when compared to the same quarter in 2013. That means that Apple sold a record-breaking 5.5 million Macs by the end of the third quarter. Globally, Apple sits in the fifth spot, behind Lenovo, HP, Dell and Acer.

Indeed, Apple’s growth in the PC market is noteworthy, and it should be interesting to see if that trend continues.

Did you buy a Mac this year?
